If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately. Be extremely suspicious if you are asked for money for transportation costs, communication fees or marriage processing and medical fees via Western Union. Catfishers often claim to be a soldier who has been posted overseas, someone whose work sees them travel a lot or any other number of professions that make it difficult to meet in person. Scammers are known to blackmail their targets using compromising material.
And chances are, the scammer looks nothing like the photos they have on their profile or the photos that they send the victim. They often claim to be from Australia or another western country, but travelling or working overseas. Scamwatch strongly recommends you do not travel overseas to meet someone you have never met before. Catfishers can be driven by anything from loneliness to obsession or revenge.
